Back In Black...

Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy - but mysterious. But above all black says this: "I don’t bother you - don’t bother me".

Remembering Keith Haring...

Grace Jones performing at Roseland Ballroom, NYC on New Years Eve: 1987
wearing a towering skirt and body paint, both by Keith Haring

Today should have been Keith Haring's birthday, but we lost him too soon. Anyone who grew up in NYC during the eighties has lived with Keith Haring as part of the urban landscape, his public artworks appearing frequently on buildings, sidewalks and playgrounds. He was an artist who took graffiti to a new level and taught New Yorkers to embrace street art. I miss his work and continue to look for it on a regular basis. Whenever I come across a bit, usually in and around SoHo, I get the overwhelming feeling that everything is right with the world. That's one powerful gift he's left us.

Thank you, Keith. Wish you were here...

If you were some sort of sea creature...

What would you be? I would be a Vampire Squid. It may look intimidating, but it's really just an old softie. Plus, as my friend Jae observed, it has such a lovely skirt. The next best thing to a Yohji cape!

*Thanks to runner for the image.

The apple doesn't fall far...

My father studying abroad in Madrid, Spain (1963)

Dad moved from Sicily to Brooklyn, then Queens, with my grandparents, finishing high school in the NYC public school system. After college, he went back to Europe for a year of study in Spain and, later, received his Master's Degree in Foreign Language (Spanish) from Hunter College in Manhattan, where he met my mom, who had also moved here from southern Italy with her family. Mom received her Master's Degree in French. I was their first child — born and raised in NYC.

Dad's the one with the pinstriped jacket and the book. I believe he's even wearing an ascot; hence, my proclivity for nerdy, intellectual types.

RIP: Antoni Tapies...

Antoni Tapies: Esperit Català II Graphic Print. Etching and Embossing. Limited Edition (75). Signed and Numbered. Year: 1974

Antoni Tàpies, a largely self-taught Spanish abstract painter whose seductive, tactile surfaces, often scratched with mysterious graffiti-like marks, made use of unconventional materials like marble dust, ground chalk, sand and earth, died on Monday in Barcelona. He was 88.

Fade to grey...

It's fleeting cobwebby hieroglyphics, half confused, half sensed as some unfolding knowledge. A bit like sketches by Leonardo da Vinci.
